To the ordinary people of the early Taiwanese culture, wood craft was an integral part of life. Through the skills of craftsmen and local materials, the craftsmen made products for every aspects of daily life including the need of diet, clothing, accommodation, transportation and folk beliefs. Moreover, traditional wood craft is passed down from generation to generation of craftsmen. When a craft master was an apprentice, he learnt to manage the craft from every little job assigned by his master and gradually grew to be a master himself. Hence, a piece of wooden work is not only an emblem of vernacular beauty, but also a materialization of the wisdom and experience of generations of craftsmen.
“The Spirit of Craft in Wood” is a joint exhibition of four apprentices of traditional wood crafts: Bo-Yang Zhuang (莊博揚), You-Rui Luo (羅又睿), Shu-Wei Zhang (張書瑋) and Dai-Yi Lin (林岱儀) , who have immersed themselves in learning wood carving skills. Taking place in this experimental space for traditional arts, this exhibition showcases a real-time interactive demonstration of wood carving in order to display the process of creating these stunning works. Hopefully, the beauty of traditional wood crafts and the spirits of craftsmanship shall be manifested and then experienced.
